Finding the right treatment program is a big decision for you or someone you love. If you’ve been searching for an addiction treatment center near you, our Portsmouth addiction center may be exactly what you’re looking for. Sunrise Treatment Center has been helping adults across Ohio address the underlying causes of substance use disorder, including co-occurring mental health needs, since 2007, with evidence-based, individualized care that meets people where they are. Whether you’re weighing alcohol rehab, support for another substance, or both, our Portsmouth location offers outpatient addiction treatment services so you can get real support while keeping your job, your home, and your family life intact. Below, we’ll walk through your treatment options at our Portsmouth program, who it’s for, and how to get started.
We know that choosing an addiction treatment center is personal and that it often doesn’t take just one try before treatment sticks. That understanding shapes how we work with every patient at our Portsmouth location: individual counseling first, with additional levels of care available as needs change. We also encourage every patient to build relationships with support groups, sponsors, and other peer support in the Portsmouth recovery community, because long-term recovery holds up best when clinical care is backed by a real community outside our walls. Whether you call it an addiction treatment center or a drug treatment center, this work has always come down to one thing for us: saving lives, one Portsmouth patient at a time.
Whether you’re looking for counseling-only support or medication-assisted treatment (MAT), our Portsmouth team can help you figure out which option fits your situation. And because recovery rarely follows a straight line, we build in relapse prevention and ongoing peer support alongside treatment to help it hold.
Sunrise is built around three things: private, convenient, and affordable care. Because we’re an outpatient program, our Portsmouth location fits into your life instead of taking you away from it. There’s no need to put your job, your home, or your routine on hold. Patients keep working, keep going to school, and keep showing up for their families while attending scheduled sessions nearby. That accessibility also makes it easier for family members to stay involved in someone’s recovery, and it reflects our belief that early intervention and a strong support system go a long way toward lasting sobriety.
Sunrise started as a small private practice offering Office-Based Opioid Treatment, and grew into Ohio’s first buprenorphine-only Opioid Treatment Program by 2013, grounded in addiction medicine from day one. Medication-assisted treatment has remained central to our treatment programs ever since, because it’s one of the most effective tools available for reducing opioid risks and supporting overdose prevention. We added an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) in 2015, and mental health treatment certification in 2018 so patients with co-occurring diagnoses could get that care in-house. In 2025, we opened our mental health support and treatment services to patients who don’t have a co-occurring substance use disorder. As a licensed Opioid Treatment Program, we operate under oversight from the Ohio Board of Pharmacy, the state of Ohio, the DEA, and SAMHSA, and we hold accreditation consistent with those standards. As we’ve said from the beginning, our holistic approach includes personalized care, counseling, and support throughout every stage of recovery.
Our Portsmouth clinical staff can all provide basic case management and crisis intervention alongside counseling. For patients who need more support navigating housing, benefits, or other social needs, Sunrise also employs dedicated case managers. Our team includes medical providers with full-time careers in addiction medicine, and clinicians trained to treat co-occurring mental health conditions (sometimes called dual diagnosis) alongside substance use disorder, so patients aren’t bounced between separate providers for related problems. That team-based approach, clinical and medical staff working from the same treatment plan, is what our care model is built around.
Walking into treatment for the first time is hard enough without also feeling judged. Our Portsmouth staff are trained to meet patients where they are, without lectures or shame, and to build the kind of provider relationship that makes it easier to be honest about what’s actually going on. That relationship, more than any amenity, is what makes the difference.
Because Sunrise doesn’t run residential facilities, there’s no bed to check into and no overnight stay. Our Portsmouth location is set up for scheduled visits: individual counseling, group sessions, and medication management, all close to home. If your needs turn out to be more than outpatient care can safely handle, we maintain referral relationships to make sure you land somewhere that can help.
Sunrise is an outpatient program, so we don’t operate an inpatient detox unit. For patients who need minor detoxification or withdrawal management, our medical team can provide that support on a case-by-case basis as part of outpatient care. If a patient’s withdrawal management needs are more intensive than outpatient care can safely manage, we’ll help connect them with a provider who can.
Most patients start with our non-intensive outpatient treatment track, built around individual counseling. From there, Portsmouth patients can move between our outpatient programs as their needs change:
Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) has been core to Sunrise since our earliest days as an Opioid Treatment Program, and it remains one of the most effective interventions available for opioid use disorder. Patients who don’t need or want medication, including those focused on alcohol addiction treatment or other alcohol rehab needs, can choose our counseling-only track instead; MAT isn’t a requirement to receive care here. We also support patients pursuing harm reduction and community-based recovery through support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA), SMART Recovery, and Rational Recovery, since relapse prevention holds up better when clinical care is backed by a real recovery community.
Our Portsmouth clinical team draws on established, evidence-based therapeutic services, including:
Group sessions, case management, crisis intervention, and peer support round out the day-to-day experience for most patients, alongside the addiction treatment services above.
Every Portsmouth patient works with our team to build a treatment plan with specific, measurable goals, because a plan that isn’t tailored to the person rarely holds up. That starts with a comprehensive assessment of each patient’s needs, followed by goals set collaboratively with the patient. From there, we match each patient to the right level of care based on what they actually need, with referral relationships in place if their needs exceed what outpatient care can safely provide. Case managers and the clinical team check in regularly to adjust the plan as those needs change.
Sunrise works with a wide range of payers so cost isn’t the reason someone puts off getting help. These insurance plans typically cover individual counseling, medication-assisted treatment, and mental health treatment, and our billing team can help you understand what applies to your specific coverage. Insurance plans we accept include:
There may still be copays, deductibles, or other costs specific to your plan. Our billing team will help you verify insurance coverage and walk you through what ongoing care will look like during your benefit check.
